A303: Amesbury to Berwick Down
We are developing a scheme to help reunite the World Heritage Site and improve everyone’s experience, whether they’re a motorist or a visitor.
We are committed to delivering a high quality, high performing route. We are developing plans to build a 1.8 mile tunnel (2.9km) where the A303 passes Stonehenge, with a dual carriageway bypass for the village of Winterbourne Stoke.
On completion of all the upgraded sections, the A303 corridor will provide expressway standard to link the M3 in the South East and the M5 in the South West down to the A30, improving journeys for millions of people and helping to deliver economic growth in the south west.
The unveiling of the plans at the first public consultation earlier this year was covered by all the major UK media. It even received global interest, due to the iconic recognition globally of Stonehenge. We care about heritage and are working with all key stakeholders to provide the best solution. We are currently looking at all the consultation responses to help us develop the scheme.
As our Chief Executive Jim O’Sullivan said:
“Our plans for the A303 recognise the national importance of the route and these improvements will bring real benefit to the region and local communities.”
