We move together

Easier Journeys

The M5 is a strategic route that carries between 50,000 and 75,000 vehicles every day between the south west and the Midlands. A very busy section of motorway, it carries traffic into Birmingham and is frequently congested.

M5 junctions 4a to 6: Smart Motorway

To add extra capacity we will make the M5 between junctions 4a (Bromsgrove) and 6 (Worcester) a smart motorway with “all lane running”. This means there will be no hard shoulder. Instead all four lanes will be open for traffic to use. If drivers need to stop in an emergency, they’ll be able to use one of the regularly spaced emergency refuge areas.

We’ll improve journeys on this vital route by adding capacity, reducing congestion and making the road more reliable. Crucially, we’ll also support economic development in the region by improving access to business hubs including Birmingham International Airport, the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) and various major freight depots and business centres.
